BREAD OF OPPORTUNITY AND VALUE

With the increasing demand for healthier foods, and the growing awareness of the importance of such ideas as sustainability, the “100 mile diet” and “locally grown,” Portofino Bakery is excited to introduce two new loaves that embody this movement towards a healthier future: our artisan made Vancouver Island Wholegrain Batard and a Vancouver Island Harvest Pan loaf. As the names suggest, both loaves are made with wheat grown at a stone's throw from our bakery, in wheat fields in Metchosin and the Peninsula. It's taken some time to find a secure and reliable source for locally grown wheat that have the characteristics we search for, but we're happy to say we've finally managed to do so.

Portofino prides itself in making healthy, high quality and delicious products at affordable prices. At the same time, the company is passionately committed to the very real notion of sustainability. To this end, Portofino has just completed an extensive retrofit of the electrical needs within the entire facility, thereby reducing the annual energy consumption by a third (based on an evaluation of our old usage and a calculation of our new usage by BC Hydro). Says General Manager Jaap Verbeke: "Using less resources but using them smarter is not only a fun challenge, but it makes a whole lot of fiscal sense. What can be more gratifying than reducing business operating costs while simultaneously reducing our carbon footprint?"
